Gabellini Sheppard

The Jil Sander San Francisco boutique is situated within a landmark structure on Maiden Lane near Union Square. The 4,500-square-foot boutique features a double-height space that allowed for the creation of a sweeping interior facade penetrated by northern light. Throughout the store, light has been used as a sculptural material to focus and transform the space’s emotional perception. The spatial concept created an environment of open, sun lit planes suspended by a shaded ceiling canopy allowing the collection to float freely within the space. 

A stainless steel mesh staircase suspended within the double-height space connects the Women’s collection on the first floor to the Men’s collection above. Depending on the lighting conditions and the point of view, the veiled quality of the mesh alternates between opacity and transparency.
