Gabellini Sheppard Associates lead the transformation of Rockefeller Center’s Public Realm, a cherished landmark in the heart of New York City managed by our long-time client, Tishman Speyer. Tishman Speyer purchased the center in 2000, and then engaged our studio as stewards of this iconic Landmark recognized by its premiere historical significance to the city of New York.
Tasked with reconceiving the space for contemporary public use, our concept was “Burnishing. Changing. Adapting” - a mantra we relied on to reinforce the legacy of the center while creating a rationalization to balance heritage with appropriate innovative change.
Our vision for transforming the center includes enhancements to lighting, plazas, stair cases, gardens, art works, storefronts and of course, the architectural intervention necessary to meet the current demands of high pedestrian circulation, increasing connectivity between buildings, and supporting the world class retail businesses adjacent to 5th Avenue. All work was approved following rigorous review by Community Boards and the Landmarks Planning Commission. Construction is set to begin in 2021.
Rockefeller Center is a large complex consisting of 19 commercial buildings covering 22 acres between 48th Street and 51st Street in Midtown Manhattan, NYC. As well as being a place of business to major commercial interests, it is a premier destination of world class shopping, restaurants and entertainment. Former work completed for this location includes the NBCUniversal Experience, Top of the Rock Observation Deck, the redesign of the iconic Rainbow Room which was also joined by a new bar and lounge, Bar65 and various prefunction event spaces.
