Uniqlo +J Collection

Tokyo

For the relaunch of +J, a long-anticipated collaboration between legendary fashion designer Jil Sander and apparel retailer Uniqlo, Gabellini Sheppard was brought on as the spatial advisor and creator of the worldwide retail concept. Our studio infused our design questions with the simultaneous harmonization and juxtaposition of space and movement, light and color, surface and materials, performance and function, display and merchandising, and spectacle and campaign. By crafting a design narrative around these dualities, the environment becomes receptive to multiple identities. The very core of this environment is built upon the cultivation of one identity born of multiple contributors, allowing our design to become a symbol of the union between Uniqlo and Jil Sander.

The nomadic spirit of this design collaboration is embodied by Gabellini Sheppard’s spatial narrative for this project, which utilizes dynamic movement to deform the perimeter, celebrating ‘behind the scenes’ elements and welcoming them to center stage. Our design draws inspiration from the transitory pop-up store, offering energizing serenity through a sculptural retail environment with fluid, sloped walls breaking through the geometry of the surrounding environment.
